A newcomer returns us to the essential pleasures of the well-crafted puzzle in this debut, the absorbing story of a young British WWI veteran returning from the war to his job as a Scotland Yard inspector. After Antony murders Miriam, it sets off a chain of events that involves blackmail, homoerotic obsession, an investigation, and more murder. Antony suggests that the men “swap” murders-Antony killing Miriam and Haines killing Antony’s father-since neither would have a motive, freeing them both from becoming suspects, while Haines considers the proposition nothing more than a joke. In Highsmith’s novel, a fateful chance encounter between two disgruntled strangers on a train has deadly consequences architect Guy Haines wants to leave his cheating wife Miriam for his new love, Anne, while Bruno Antony, a wealthy psychopath wants to be rid of his overbearing father. This reputation was bolstered the next year, when Alfred Hitchcock, known as the “Master of Suspense,” adapted the book to screen. Highsmith’s debut novel, Strangers on a Train, was published in 1950, marking the start of her notable career. I immediately connected with these characters, especially Ellie and Uncle Mick. This is an engaging and addictive historical thriller with a touch of romance. Their first mission leads to more as it becomes clear a traitor is at work and German spies are involved. When a house robbery goes bad, Ellie finds herself working for a government official, Major Ramsey, in order to keep herself and Uncle Mick out of jail. With Toby and Colm off fighting in the war, it is up to Ellie and Uncle Mick to keep supporting the family. Her Uncle Mick is a master safecracker, and she and her cousins, Toby and Colm, have learned everything they know from him. Electra (Ellie) belongs to a family of thieves. They also made this book an “Editor’s Choice.” It’s a great read and the start of a new series.Ī Peculiar Combination by Ashley Weaver is the first book in the new Electra McDonnell series, which is set in World War II England. A Peculiar Combination was one of my favorites of all the books I read for the May edition of Historical Novels Review. In this instance, we'll send weekly updates to keep you aware. Sean Crisden was on point with his performance and even managed to drag a couple of tears out of me. I don't know if I was just in the mood for it this time, or if Sean Crisden's performance was just that great, but I enjoyed this so much more than when I read it. But mostly, I loved getting to see the relationship between Matt and Kira deepen into a real abiding love. Told from Matt's single POV there's a bit of angst, some mystery that's woven really well throughout, action that (with Sean's performance) had me on the edge of my seat, and some pretty hot sex. The two are quick to fall in love, and Matt is happier than he's ever been, but the case he's working on is heating up - and about to change all of their lives forever. Matt finally has someone who understands every part of him - including his ambitions - and matches him at every stage. So the two begin seeing each other in secret and their passion explodes. On the surface, “Pines” is the story of Secret Service Agent Ethan Burke who is sent to Wayward Pines, a remote and stereotypical small town paradise in the middle of the Idahoan mountains, to investigate the disappearance of two fellow agents. Be forewarned: it’s impossible to adequately review this book without spoilers but I’ll try to keep them to a bare minimum. The mysterious and often ridiculous feeling of David Lynch’s television series took root and grew like a weed, within a teenage boy’s receptive imagination. It was a revival of earlier attempts to continue the “Twin Peaks” series (He actually wrote a third season for the show). In his own words, Crouch tells us, this is his attempt to tell a deeply disturbing but fulfilling tale of a forgotten town full of quirky characters and incredible situations. Inspired by his fascination with “Twin Peaks” and “The X-Files”, “Pines” is Crouch’s first novel of the “Wayward” trilogy. The smart reader would be wise to heed the unspoken warning – suspect the unexpected and the usual suspects – before they even turn the first page. From the very beginning, the acknowledgement page in fact, Blake Crouch alludes to the less than traditional plot and twists in “ Pines”. |
